MCAT 2018-19: Eligibility, Registration, Exam Pattern

Medical College Admission Test commonly known as MCAT is an international level standardized test for admission in a medical school in countries such as United States, Canada and Australia. It is organized and administered by American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). The entrance examination is designed for aspirants who want pursue MD degree. In this article, students can get important information and details such as eligibility, admission procedure, exam pattern and so on.

MCAT Registration:

MCAT examinations are held 25 times in a year in different parts of the world. It is bifurcated in three zones i.e. Gold Zone, Silver Zone and Bronze Zone. Students can visit the official website to know the exact date of examination in different countries.

A candidate needs to plan to appear the MCAT examination a year prior to the desired institute starting year. The score of MCAT examination is valid for 2-3 years and candidate can appear 3 times in a year and 7 times in a year.

To apply for MCAT entrance examination candidate needs to follow the below steps:

  • Candidate needs to visit the official website which is aamc.org.
  • Click on the option of MCAT under Pre-Medical student category.
  • Then candidate needs to sign up if he/she is new user or can sign in by entering the username and password.
  • To register candidate needs to enter valid email i.d, name, and gender.
  • After logging in, candidate needs to fill all the details which have been asked for registration.

The fees for registration in MCAT would cost $310 in gold zone (about 1 month or more prior to the examination date) and fees do increase with late registration. There are other additional fees for location and date changes and international fees if an application is of non-US location.

MCAT Eligibility:

An applicant who wishes to apply to health professional institutes can appear for MCAT entrance examination. With that it also includes,

  • Allopathic
  • Osteopathic
  • Podiatric
  • Veterinary Medicine

A candidate should have finished or pursuing an MBBS degree course for applying the examination. Applicants usually should have completed the following courses before applying to US medical schools:

  • One year of Biology
  • One year of Physics
  • One year of English
  • Two years of Chemistry (through organic chemistry)

If the above conditions are doesn’t apply then an applicant needs to ask for ‘special permission’ from AAMC before applying the examination. International aspirants do not require ‘special permission’ to register for MCAT if they have completed the MBBS or pursuing courses. Also, applicant needs a valid passport and identity proof.

MCAT Exam Centre:

MCAT examinations are conducted across 21 countries including USA and its territories. Although MCAT examination doesn’t have any test center in India; applicant needs to travel to neighboring countries. Most countries do have 1-5 centers for MCAT examination. Selection of location has to be done before applying for the test.

MCAT Exam Pattern:

The MCAT Examination is a computer based test on four sections that are:

  • Chemical and Physical Foundation of Biological Systems.
  • Biological and Biochemical Foundation of Living Systems.
  • Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
  • Psychological, Social and Biological Foundation of Behaviour.

The total duration of MCAT examination is approximately 6 hours and 5 minutes. The MCAT score ranges from 472 to 528 with 500 being midpoint. The score table of MCAT is:
